Resumé:
As research educated with broad competencies in social and cultural analysis, I carry out a spectre of tasks of research, evaluation, teaching, consultancies, written and oral presentations. Specifically, I have experiences and scientific production in subjects stretching from the Middle East, Islamism and education to ethnic minorities, consumption and welfare, as well as children and youth problems in a Danish context.
My current research concerns Turkish migrants in Denmark and the way they establish relations to Turkey, discernable from consumption practices; i.e. consumption is approached as a lens through which social position and relations of belonging are expressed. Focus of attention is how distinction is produced from consumption practices among migrants of Turkish origin in Denmark as well as to other parts of the population in Denmark, and finally to Turks settled in Turkey. This research is intended to elaborate on the connections between migration, social and economic development in Turkey and among Turkish migrants in Denmark.
Other research interests
The Middle East in the broadest sense of the term, with special mention of Morocco, Egypt and Turkey constitute another area of interest. The thematic focus is on women activists of Islamism, or Islamic movements, as well as on the socio-economic, cultural and historical roots of these movements. This lead to studies of the connections between Islam and political reform movements, the historical development of educational institutions, feminism, as well as to orientalism (and orientalism-in-reverse!). Further, issues of nation-/ stateformation and post-colonialism, in brief, the aftermath of colonialism (as G. Spivak has it), and the way gender relations have become politicized in most Middle Eastern states, form part of this "aftermath".
Finally I have done research among ethnic minorities in Denmark, among other issues I have investigated consumption of news media.
